OAKLAND — Bikes 4 Life is hosting its 5th annual peace bicycle ride from Lake Merritt to West Oakland on Saturday, July 21.

Bikes 4 Life’s peace bike rides attract people of all ages, from college students to seniors. Participants are asked to sign a “peace pledge” to signify unity for keeping the streets of Oakland peaceful.

This year, the nonprofit bicycle shop is honoring the parents of Hiram Lawrence Jr., a 23-month-old boy who was shot in West Oakland last year during the filming of a music video. The boy survived in the hospital for two weeks before doctors took him off life support because he had no brain activity. Two other children, Carlos Nava Jr., 3, and Gabriel Martinez Jr., 5, also died violently in Oakland last year.

The ride starts at 5 p.m. July 21 at 468 Perkins St. at the lake and ends at 1600 7th St. in West Oakland.

After the ride, there will be a block party reception at Rev Café with food, prizes and competitions. Hiram Lawrence’s parents will be honored then by city and county officials, bike ride organizers said.
