The Santa Clara County Library District is kicking off its third annual Distinguished Author Series next month in Campbell, when the first of three writers is set to speak.
“We are happy to offer the Distinguished Author Series in person this year,” said County Librarian Jennifer Weeks in a statement. “We hope this year’s three very different and dynamic authors will encourage our community members to join us in the conversation around interesting and important topics.”
Television anchor, author and Emmy-winning journalist Emily Chang will take the stage at Campbell’s Heritage Theatre 1 W. Campbell Ave., on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. Chang reports on global technology and media companies, startups and the future of business. Her exposé 2018 “Brotopia: Breaking Up the Boys’ Club of Silicon Valley” shed light on the issue of gender gaps in Silicon Valley that have shut women out of the great wealth creation.
Bestselling novelist and editor Silvia Moreno-Garcia will continue the series Saturday, Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. at the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos. Born in Mexico and residing in Canada, Moreno-Garcia is the recipient of the Locus and British Fantasy Awards. Her works include “Mexican Gothic” (2020), “Velvet Was the Night” (2021) and “The Daughter of Doctor Moreau” (2022). Moreno-Garcia will be in conversation with moderator Alexis Madrigal of KQED.
Dr. Daphne Miller is a medical doctor and author who studies the connections between health, food and agriculture with the goal of building a healthier and more resilient food system. Her Distinguished Author talk is set for Saturday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m. in the Forum 1 Building at De Anza College, 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino.
Miller also helped to bridge aspects of the medical system into park systems, introducing “park prescriptions” in her 2009 Washington Post piece “Take a Hike and Call Me in the Morning.” She has written two books, “The Jungle Effect: The Science of Wisdom and Traditional Diets” (2008) and “Farmacology: Total Health from the Soil Up” (2013).
The Distinguished Author Series is free and open to the public. Register in advance to attend each of these events at sccld.org/authorseries.
