Advanced Cell Technology, a Silicon Valley biotech company (Alameda), has developed a way to grow stem-cell lines for a single cell extracted from a human embryo -- without destroying an embryo.

It is too early to say for sure, but this could have profound implications for the current ethical and legal dilemmas that have limited stem-cell research in this country -- not to mention for repercussions for the work of hundreds of start-ups here in the Bay Area.
