Google's office architecture: A competitive advantage?
The LA-based architects of Google's new headquarters designed 13 different "zones" and arranged them from "hot" (clubhouse, pool table and lounge area) to "cold" (closed workrooms), using different color, lighting and space depending on the level of interaction and creativity the Google employees wanted to have in them. All this is pretty cool and exciting, but they have a name for this already: prison.
Prison, even though it's inconsequential that you get a paycheck every so often in this prison. Us non-Googlers probably drip with envy at the amenities we read about Googlers receiving: chutes-and-ladders in the office, free gummi bears, all you can drink Odwalla, AstroTurf covered bathroom stalls, Segway rides to and from your car, etc.
But the societal implications of voluntary incarceration have yet to be measured.
What separates what goes on at Google from the sweatshops in Bangladesh is that at Google they at least call you by your first name.
Well looks pretty sweet, love the use of colors and natural light. These guys know what they are doing, that is for sure. Its all about employee retention and I'm sure they are not hurting by providing these ammenities - - just the opposite in fact.
And message to the "genius" who likens it to a prison. Hey genius, fyi: the employees are not FORCED to work there. They can leave if they want = get a clue!
