Third-quarter venture capital investments into North American cleantech start-ups totaled $425 million, according to data from industry analyst Cleantech Venture Network. That's a record.

That's also a 15.3% increase from the second quarter, and a significant 47% boost from the third quarter last year. Such investments have increased for five straight quarters.

Cleantech captured 8.1% of the $5.263 billion of venture capital invested in North America overall, up significantly from 6.1% in the previous quarter. Cleantech now ranks sixth in size behind software, biotechnology, telecommunications, medical devices and equipment and semiconductors.
