Visualizing the world of music
This is from researchers at Stanford, MIT and Yahoo! We're not entirely sure what it's showing, and even if we read the research paper word-for-word, we're not sure we'd get it. But Paul Lamere says it shows 10,000 artists and how they are related to each other. Anyway, the project link and interactive demo are here.

This research was, most likely, inspired by Brian Uzzi's study (visualization) of network effects in the Broadway Musical Industry.
Uzzi is from the Kellogg School of Management. The related paper is "How Small Worlds Make Big Differences: The Case of the Broadway Musical Industry," December 4, 2002.
