Katrina affects even Silicon Valley

sprint.jpgSprint, which has some pretty lousy wireless coverage in Bay Area, told us yesterday it has temporarily halted building new cell towers here until it can rebuild the hundreds that have gone down in Louisiana area. We found this out when we called customer service to complain about lack of a signal at Fremont, where they're supposed to be building a new tower. Now that we know, we'll temporarily stop cursing Sprint every time a call is dropped. At least they have their priorities straight during this time of tragedy.

Update 9/5: Sprint says in this WSJ piece (sub req) that it has gotten 35 of 208 cellular sites back up.

not to be cynical (except i'm going to be) but maybe they never planned on building that new cell tower in fremont. and they're using the louisiana as an excuse.

This is Sprint, we're talking about here my friend. Sprint is the fount of cellular evil. Nothing they do is 'in the right place'.

Simple logic. They won't be able to rebuild their towers in LA for months. So why have they stopped building *now* in Fremont? Because they have a good excuse to abuse their customers. Gullible, well-meaning chaps like you who have no real concept of evil or you wouldn't still be with them.

Besides, their LA towers were undoubtably insured. Only manpower could be limited, and for that see my first point. I'll bet they stiffed the contractors in Fremont while they were at it.
