Google's Perfect 10 problem.
Updated
Perfect 10 contends that Google is displaying thousands of its adult images to draw traffic to its Web site, and so has sued to stop Google from copying, displaying and distributing what it says are Perfect 10 copyrighted images.
Some may be wondering about Google's "do no evil" motto when it comes to such things. Copyright issues aside, Google seems to have shrugged off any intention to avoid explicit images -- unless we've missed something. Remember, Google co-founder Sergey Brin kind of liked Playboy while at Stanford, and then, of course, there was the famous pre-IPO interview with Playboy. Yahoo, meanwhile, has consistently faced protests from some irate shareholders about its explicit images, but it also seems to have shrugged off the issue. Both have relied on similar family-safe filter options, and that seems to have satisfied most.
Update: Good piece here by Techdirt making clear that it's not Google ripping pictures, but other sites. Google is then just taking the pictures from those other sites.

On a related note, there is something of an untold story regarding the amount of paid-search revenue derived from adult activities. I've heard some estimates from SEM firms -- don't remember the exact numbers -- indicating that the percentage of revenues coming from adult advertisers (the "sin segment") is disproportionately high.

Do you ever worry that the supercomputer in charge of Google will go evil and try to take over the world?

This is an obvious ploy by Perfect 10 to generate traffic. I wonder how many people had even heard of this pub before they read your blog. If Perfect 10 sees a spike in traffic, Silicon Beat should demand a cut. ;-)

I agree that Google should remove the images and while doing that they should also just remove the site from being index or given any PR for that matter.

Perfect 10 should thank Googel for finding these other unauthorized sites using their images. What a great public service. I too had not heard of Perfect 10 and I am a fan of mags like FMH and Maxim. Publicity stunt.

It is funny that when I type Fuck Google in Google I get a lot of response. However when I type fuck Yahoo I get almost nothing. What I am trying to say is that what does Google have to offer other then hype???? I mean look at the front page. Nothing. I prefer to see something, anything, what is the problem. The main thing that bothers me about Google is that when I use it I get irrelevent results. When I type a certain geographical location and product I get a list of bullshit. Fuck Google is all I can say and I know for a fact that other people feel the same way.
