Simply Hired scores $3 million, continues buzz

simplyhired.gifSimply Hired, the Silicon Valley job search engine start-up that has been creating some buzz lately, has raised $3 million in second round of angel financing, the company said.

The investors include Rajeev Motwani, a Stanford computer science professor and early investor and technical advisor for Google; Ron Conway, founder of Angel Investors, an early investor in both Google and Ask Jeeves; and Kanwal Rekhi, a serial entrepreneur and former CTO of Novell; and several others.

This is a crowded space, including not only mature companies like Yahoo's HotJobs, CareerBuilder, Craigslist and Monster, but a host of other hungry start-ups, like WorkZoo, Jobster and indeed. We last wrote about the action here. Like Simply Hired, many of these others are scraping the Web for job listings from employers and other sites.

No wonder, then, Simply Hired is working to grab peoples' attention. It recently created a cute site called Simply Fired, which our Merc colleague Nicole Wong wrote about here. Mark Jen, the guy who got fired from Google after blogging secrets about the company, was one of the first to post to that site. Read his entry here (or see a snippet from his upbeat post, below in extended entry, which reflects why Silicon Valley is so dynamic -- it is filled with these sorts of people). Another guy apparently wrote in to say he got fired for running over his boss with his car.

Anyway, see below too for the full Simply Hired press release.

Here's the part of Jen's post we found interesting and instructive:

getting fired is an interesting experience. some people think it's embarrassing (just ask my parents). others think it's the end of the world. i think it's best viewed as a learning experience and after all, wouldn't life be boring without the unexpected twists and turns?

i didn't mind the public nature of my incident. it jump started a bunch of stuff for me: i had a chance to re-evaluate my career goals, i checked out some new technologies, i got to meet a lot of cool people, and in the end i found an awesome new job at a company that even let me help create their blog policy.
