Commerce One, the once high-flying Silicon Valley software company, had helped come up with ways for businesses to conduct automatic, business-to-business dealings over the Internet like paying vendors or finding business partners. It helped craft some standard computer languages like XML, so companies with different computer systems could still conduct transactions automatically.
