Mattson Technology of Fremont is the latest chip-equipment maker to announce layoffs as it begins a “reorganization of its structure to reflect changes in anticipated levels of business,” according to a filing it made today after the markets closed. (Earlier Tuesday Novellus Systems said it had decided to cut 10 percent of its staff as it lowered profits forecast for the second time in three weeks.)

Mattson Technology, the Fremont maker of chip-making equipment that said last month it was eliminating about 80 jobs, or 14 percent of its work force citing “a protracted downturn” in the industry, released actual results for its third quarter Wednesday, and they weren’t pretty.

Citing a “protracted downturn” affecting the wafer fabrication equipment market due to “oversupply conditions in the memory segment” that has been “exacerbated by macro-economic conditions”, Mattson Technology Chief Executive David Dutton said Wednesday the company would eliminate about 80 positions, or about 14 percent of its global workforce as part of a “cost alignment plan” it has adopted.
