Can Jim Tomsula adequately replace Jim Harbaugh?

Promoting Tomsula from defensive-line coach wasn’t a surprise. But a winning record will be a stunner in his first season, and good luck trying to top Harbaugh’s feat of NFC championship game berths each of the first three years. Tomsula’s friendly demeanor and blue-collar background could ease discomfort with this transition. He won’t micromanage, and his makeshift staff needs to win over doubters.

Will the addition of Torrey Smith help Colin Kaepernick regain his mojo?

Smith’s speed offers a downfield threat that benefits Kaepernick and opens up room for other targets. Smith’s route running is overlooked but improved. The 49ers’ long-term commitment to Smith means he’s not merely an attempt at a quick fix.

Can this defense survive losing starters Patrick Willis, Justin Smith, etc.?

NaVorro Bowman’s comeback after 1 ½ years is pivotal to this unit’s fate. Replacements abound for new defensive coordinator Eric Mangini. Top draft pick Arik Armstead and incoming veteran Darnell Dockett must shore up the line, while an infusion of youth must step up in the secondary.

Will Frank Gore be missed in the backfield?

Parting with the 49ers’ all-time rushing leader is steeped in sentimentality, to say nothing of his running ability and pass-protection prowess. Carlos Hyde must seize this job and add explosive runs, complemented by Kendall Hunter’s relief and Reggie Bush’s third-down cameos.

Can Vernon Davis return to Pro Bowl form?

Davis looked reinvigorated in the offseason program, which he skipped last year en route to a career-worst season. He’s entering a contract year and his 10th season. Only five tight ends have been in the league longer: Antonio Gates, Jason Witten, Heath Miller, Alex Smith and Ben Watson.
