MOUNTAIN VIEW — Although no one can say for certain which two NFL teams will face off in Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, there is general agreement that the game will bring in plenty of tourists and their dollars.
So the city of Mountain View is taking steps meant to save money that day, such as not allowing its police officers to work at the event, and to capture some loose dollars through a hike in parking fees.
Users of the Castro Street Transit Center, where Super Bowl crowds can catch Caltrain and VTA light rail to the game, or of municipal parking lots can expect to pay a good chunk to park.
The City Council on Tuesday also authorized allowing four still-to-be-determined city lots in the Castro Street area to charge twice as much as usual for all-day parking, from $10 to $20.
As for the farmers market that operates at the Transit Center on Sundays, city staff indicated it would have to be cancelled or moved.
The council also agreed to chip in $7,500 to help with a $30,000 promotion planned by the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce and the Central Business Association. The money would be spent on banners and marketing discounts.
