Twitter: Trump’s ‘nuclear button’ tweet too vague of a threat

Once again, Twitter says President Trump did not violate its terms of service when he once again used Twitter to threaten nuclear war.

In response to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s New Year address, in which he said he had “a nuclear button” on his desk and threatened to use it against the United States, President Trump said on Tuesday night:

Trump’s veiled threat against North Korea is nothing new. In September, he tweeted the following: “Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won’t be around much longer!”

Twitter said then that it considered the president’s tweet “newsworthy.” This time, the company is pointing to rules that state users “may not make specific threats of violence or wish for the serious physical harm, death, or disease of an individual or group of people.”

According to Twitter’s rules, Trump’s threat was too vague, but they hedge a little.

“Please note that wishing or hoping that someone experiences serious physical harm, making vague threats, or threatening less serious forms of physical harm would not fall under this specific policy,” Twitter’s rules state. “Instead, we may review and take action against that content under our abusive behavior and hateful conduct policies.”

Since Trump rode Twitter all the way to the presidency, the social media company has fielded calls to kick Trump off the platform he uses as a megaphone for getting his message out directly to the nation and to the world. Now Twitter is hearing calls for the head of CEO Jack Dorsey — who has characterized Trump’s use of the platform “fascinating” and “complicated” — if the company doesn’t ban Trump.

Tuesday night, Twitter users tweeted that they were reporting Trump’s “nuclear button tweet” to the company.

And offline, protesters are circulating a photo of “@jack is complicit” projected on the side of Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters, saying the company is helping “amplify a madman.”

The group, Resistance SF, is planning a protest at Twitter headquarters Wednesday night.

“Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter and Square, has enabled @realDonaldTrump from his first dog whistles in the birther movement to his latest nuclear pissing contest,” the group says on its Facebook event page. “Twitter is endangering the world and breaking its own terms of service to do it. Trump or Jack must go.”

A Twitter spokeswoman said Wednesday the company would have no comment on the calls for Dorsey’s resignation.

Little Rocket Man has caused untold hardship on his citizens. The atrocities he and his legacy have committed are unspeakable. It is doubtful that Little Rocket Man’s nuclear weapons development can be contained given the former Obama, Bush, and Clinton administrations have been complaisant for over 20 years in negotiations with China to curb DPRKs nuclear program. A nuclear altercation is no joke and perhaps Trump should be more presidential and less NY street brashy when commenting about Little Rocket Man.
