Pinterest’s diversity efforts yield mixed results

Pinterest on Tuesday said it exceeded some of its hiring goals for creating a more diverse workforce, but fell short in employing more underrepresented engineers this year.

“Diversity and inclusion mean a lot to us personally. They are also good for our business. Bringing in people with different backgrounds, ideas and perspectives helps us fulfill our mission and strengthens our company,” wrote Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann in a blog post.

The San Francisco tech firm set a goal to increase the hiring rate for engineers from underrepresented backgrounds to 8 percent. Pinterest’s hiring rate for this group was 5 percent.

After lowering its hiring rate goal for women in engineering to 25 percent, the company exceeded its target by 1 percent.

Pinterest also surpassed its hiring goal for people from underrepresented backgrounds in non-engineering roles. The tech firm had a hiring rate of 15 percent, exceeding its goal of 12 percent.

The company pointed to some of its diversity efforts, including an apprenticeship program and interviewing at least one person from an underrepresented background and one female for leadership positions.

The tech firm, which has more than 500 employees worldwide, said its diversity goals will remain the same for 2018.

Pinterest’s tech workforce is still 71 percent male and most of these workers are Asian or white. The company still has no black employees in leadership roles.

“We have come a long way. But we still have work to do,” Silbermann wrote.
