Trump NAFTA tweet: Mexico, Canadian mayor not having it

Mexico is refusing to negotiate with President Trump by Twitter — and by the way, the country still says it won’t pay for the wall.

Trump tweeted on Sunday that he wasn’t pleased with how negotiations over NAFTA are going, saying Mexico and Canada were “being very difficult.”

The president’s tweet comes ahead of another round of trade negotiations with Mexico and Canada starting Sept. 1 in Mexico City. His NAFTA tweet also came just minutes after he repeated his much-contradicted claim that Mexico would pay for a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Mexico released an official statement in response, saying “Mexico will not negotiate NAFTA, nor any other aspect of the bilateral relationship, through social media or any other news platform.”

In addition, the statement reiterated Mexico’s oft-repeated denial of any financial responsibility for a wall that Trump repeatedly promoted during his presidential campaign.

“As the government of Mexico has always maintained, our country will not pay, under any circumstances, a wall or physical barrier built on U.S. territory along the Mexican border,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Canada doesn’t seem to have issued an official response. But it looks like a mayor in Canada wasn’t thrilled with Trump’s tweet, either. Fred Eisenberger, mayor of Hamilton, struck back on Twitter, telling Trump to resign.

Trump’s govern-by-Twitter style has sparked criticism from everyone from everyday tweeple to U.S. government officials. For example, when he tweeted in July about banning transgender people from serving in the military, military officials said they had not received official orders. The president’s formal order to the Pentagon about the ban came Friday, about a month after he first tweeted about it.
