Amazon moves to go up against Ticketmaster and sell concert, sports tickets: report

Ticketmaster’s lock on tickets for many huge concerts and sports games may be in jeopardy, as Amazon looks to muscle in on the lucrative ticketing business, according to a new report.

Amazon has been threatening dominant players in many business sectors as it pushes aggressively into new products and services.

Now, the Seattle e-commerce behemoth is reportedly in talks with major concert venues to start selling tickets to their shows and sporting events.

“If Amazon moves ahead, it would represent the latest attempt by the world’s largest online retailer to use its massive customer base, tech savvy and bargaining power to shake up a big market,” Reuters reported Aug. 10.

“The Seattle-based company sees the U.S. ticketing market as ripe for attack.

“Consumers dislike ticket fees, and venue owners, sports leagues and teams want more distributors for their tickets as they seek to boost sales.”

Ticketmaster, owned by Live Nation Entertainment, dominates the ticket-selling market, acting as exclusive vendor for primary tickets at many major U.S. venues.

Access to tickets could be another means to lure members to the Amazon Prime shopping club. For music acts and sports teams, selling tickets through Amazon could help sell their merchandise.

“Would-be challengers have struggled to compete in the face of Ticketmaster’s strong relationships with the operators of major U.S. sports stadiums, arenas, concert halls and other venues,” according to Reuters, which said it based its report on four sources it didn’t name.

To gain venues’ approval to sell tickets, Amazon could enlist allies among performers and sports teams.

“For music acts and sports teams, selling tickets through Amazon could help sell their merchandise,” Reuters reported.

And ticket sales could help Amazon lure people to its Amazon Prime membership-based shopping program, the news service noted.

The firm already sells ticket in Britain, and has outsold Ticketmaster for some events, according to Reuters.

Neither Amazon nor Live Nation commented to Reuters on the matter.
