Facebook reportedly working on touchscreen smart speaker

Facebook is reportedly working on a smart speaker, but don’t expect the device to be as chatty as other virtual assistants.

Amazon and Google have released devices that connect to a voice-controlled virtual assistant and apparently Facebook is also interested in jumping on the bandwagon. Apple announced last month it is releasing a smart speaker called HomePod.

Facebook, though, is developing a smart speaker with a 15-inch touch panel that focuses more on image display than voice recognition, Digitimes reports, citing “sources from the upstream supply chain.”

The product will be released in 2018 and Pegatron Technology is the manufacturer, according to the report. Facebook’s Building 8, the company’s research lab, is designing the device.

Like other tech firms, Facebook also released a virtual assistant called M, but it’s currently only available on its messaging app.

The tech firm is scheduled to report its second-quarter earnings on Wednesday.
