Mind blown: Apple offers tease to upcoming emojis on World Emoji Day

So you think you’re too cool for emojis. OK. The rest of us are celebrating the fourth annual World Emoji Day by imagining the world of possibilities for the new emojis Apple says are coming out later this year.

After all, with everything going on in the news these days, an exploding-head emoji would come in handy sooner rather than later. Ditto the vomiting emoji.

Some of the emojis have been a long time coming: “New emoji include Woman with Headscarf, Bearded Person and Breastfeeding, and food items such as Sandwich and Coconut,” Apple says in its Monday blog post. Oh, and there’s a zombie emoji coming, too. Or if you’re not into the walking dead, perhaps a man sitting calmly and doing yoga might be up your emoji alley.

Apple didn’t indicate when iOS and Mac users might be able to deploy the new emojis, but iOS 11 is due out in September. Apple’s release is a part of the rollout of the standard set for all emojis. Earlier this year, the nonprofit Unicode Consortium, decider of all things emoji, announced that there would be 56 new emojis added in 2017, plus “183 emoji sequences used for gender and skin-tone variants and subdivision flags.”

How common are emojis? Linguist Vyv Evans, author of “The Emoji Code,” told USA Today that 92 percent of the 3.2 billion people in the world with internet access regularly use emojis.

In other World Emoji Day news, the Empire State Building is excited about emojis, too. The New York building is turning “emoji yellow” for the day, and the cast of the upcoming “The Emoji Movie” was there for the occasion.

And one more bit of emoji trivia: July 17 is the date shown on the calendar emoji for iOS and Android, hence all the hoopla today.
