Trump tweets false claim attacking Amazon, Washington Post

President Trump lashed out at the Washington Post and Amazon in a Wednesday morning tweet, the day after the newspaper — which is owned by Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos — published a story that showed he has fake Time magazine covers at his golf courses.

Trump’s attack on both companies isn’t new; he slammed them and Bezos during his presidential campaign as the Post assigned many reporters to cover him. Trump last year said Amazon was “getting away with murder tax-wise,” and that Bezos was holding the Washington Post over politicians’ heads so they “don’t tax Amazon like they should be taxed.”

The president’s attack doesn’t make sense because of his claim that Amazon is avoiding paying “internet taxes.” There is no federal internet tax — that’s not fake news.

If Trump is talking about Amazon collecting sales taxes on behalf of states, it’s true that the company fought doing so for years. But it eventually gave in and began doing that a while ago in many states — and nationwide starting this year.

As for the fake news that the president references, he might be upset about the Washington Post story published Tuesday that reported fake-news Time magazine covers featuring Trump are hanging in at least five of his golf clubs, “from South Florida to Scotland.”

The Post reported that Time confirmed there was no such cover featuring Trump on March 1, 2009.

Or perhaps Trump was irked by another Washington Post story, also published Tuesday, with the headline “Unafraid of Trump, GOP senators feel free to ‘go their own way’.”

After this latest airing of the president’s beef with the Washington Post, it will be interesting to see if Bezos will again be invited by Trump to another tech summit. The last couple of times Bezos showed up to one of those, his facial expressions were meme-worthy.

In 2015, Bezos tweeted how he felt about Trump, saying he would reserve a space for him on a rocket by Blue Origin (another company Bezos owns), along with the hashtag #sendDonaldtospace.

  • Oh yeah, just throw enough mud and maybe some will stick. Well, here’s some truth – The Washington Post, long a CIA mouthpiece (see operation Mockingbird and others), has only made itself less credible with Bezos’ purchase.

As to the other nonsense, yes – the Washington Post is mostly fake or twisted news now. Don’t even ask about CNN – the Army Psyops’ favorite employer.
