Apple Music’s ‘Carpool Karaoke’ to premiere on August 8

Apple Music’s first original show now has an official premiere date.

After pushing back the release date from April to “later this year,” Apple announced on Tuesday that “Carpool Karaoke: The Series” will be released on August 8. Apple Music executive Eddy Cue confirmed the release date on his Twitter account.

“Carpool Karaoke” is a spin-off from the same popular segment of the CBS late-night show “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” in which Corden drives with a celebrity while singing along to popular songs. Corden will be an executive producer of the Apple show and star in several episodes with LeBron James and Will Smith. But he will not be the regular host of the spin-off and will continue doing the segment in his own show.

Instead, a diverse rotation of celebrities will appear for one episode and do activities not limited to singing aloud in their cars for the half-hour episodes. Alicia Keys, John Legend and Miley Cyrus are a few names who will star in the first season. A new episode will come out every Tuesday after August 8.

“The show will feature many of today’s biggest names in music, television, film, sports and pop culture buckling up and belting out their favorite songs for a road trip filled with comedy, conversation and music,” said Apple in a press release.

“Carpool Karaoke” is part of a push from Apple to enter the original content producing game already dominated by Netflix and HBO. Apple is also working on “Planet of the Apps,” a “Shark Tank”-like reality television show in which developers pitching their app ideas to celebrities for funding and fame — also provided solely to Apple Music subscribers.

“We’re trying to do things that are unique and cultural,” said Cue at the Code Media conference about Apple’s foray into television in February. “We think we have a real opportunity in the TV space to do that with Apple Music and shows, and the things we’re trying to do aren’t being done by anybody else.”
