Tesla fans using imagination — and video — to envision future vehicles

The Model 3 hasn’t hit Tesla showrooms, but one auto website is imagining what the next SUV — the Model Y — will look like.

The British site Autocar sketched out a dream version of the crossover, drawing on hints CEO Elon Musk dropped about future vehicles in the Tesla lineup. Tesla has made no recent announcements on an expanded, long-term lineup.

The site imagines an SUV built on the Model 3 platform, fitted with gull-wing door like the Model X. Musk said in July the company planned a full range of electric vehicles, from a smaller sport utility, pickup trucks, tractor-trailer and buses. Musk’s grand vision calls for the company to bring renewable energy to homes, business and transportation.

The company would use common platforms for several vehicles. Musk has suggested an electric bus would take styling hints from vintage VW buses.

But first, the Model 3 has to hit the streets. A video capturing a pre-release Model 3 appeared on the YouTube channel for Unplugged Performance, a customized luxury auto business sharing an office park with SpaceX in Hawthorne, California.

Tesla has been testing the Model 3 on the streets around the Musk-owned SpaceX.

The company expects to produce the first Model 3 this year. It has a $35,000 base price with a range of around 215 miles on a single charge. Some analysts remain skeptical the company can bring the car to market this year.

Tesla lined up nearly 400,000 reservations for the lower-cost electric sedan in the weeks following its unveiling.
