Google’s futuristic campus gets green light

Google’s gotten the go-ahead to complete its gargantuan new headquarters complex in Mountain View.

Earlier this week, Mountain View’s city council voted unanimously to approve the search giant’s “Charleston East” campus project. Long in the making, that project includes a futuristic dome-like structure that would cover office spaces, retail shops and a open plaza.

The company is already reportedly taking initial steps toward beginning construction. It expects to complete it in late 2019.

Google has spent years trying to get the campus proposal approved. Mountain View’s city council voted down a previous plan from the company two years ago, largely over concerns about traffic, density and concerns about the lack of nearby housing. As part of the revamped project, Google will be required to pay for adjustments to several streets and nearby off-ramps to better accommodate traffic.
