Amazon, Netflix nab Oscar wins

There was a lot of excitement about the big flub Sunday night at the Oscars, when “La La Land” was mistakenly announced as the best picture winner instead of “Moonlight.” But picture Amazon and Netflix raising their hands and saying, “hey, guys, we won Oscars, too.”

Amazon scored three golden statues, and Academy Awards show host Jimmy Kimmel gave a shout out to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who was sitting in the audience at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

“Jeff Bezos is the founder and CEO, and I want to say, congratulations to Jeff,” Kimmel said. “And I also want you to know Jeff, if you win tonight, you can expect your Oscar to arrive in two to five business days, possibly stolen by a GrubHub delivery man.”

Kimmel also said: “Amazon produced ‘Manchester by the Sea.’ That was a fun movie, wasn’t it? You know, if you search for ‘Manchester by the Sea’ on Amazon, it says ‘customers who bought this item also purchased Zoloft.’ ”

“Manchester by the Sea” won two Oscars: one for the controversial Casey Affleck for best actor, and one for best original screenplay for Kenneth Lonegran, who also directed the film. Amazon Studios bought the film at Sundance last year for $10 million. It was the first movie produced by a streaming company to nab an Oscar nomination.

Amazon also won an Oscar for best foreign language film, for an Iranian drama titled “The Salesman.”

Farhadi boycotted the Oscars to protest President Trump’s immigration ban on seven Muslim-majority countries, which has been blocked by the courts.

“Manchester by the Sea,” which Amazon released in movie theaters first, and “The Salesman” will be coming to Amazon streaming in the next few months.

Meanwhile, streaming-video pioneer Netflix won an Oscar for short documentary for “The White Helmets,” a look at rescue workers in Syria. Netflix’s approach is different from Amazon’s in that it usually focuses on streaming its original content on its own service. For at least one film, “Beasts of No Nation,” it did limited a limited theater release in 2015 at the same time as it was streaming the movie.
