Amazon, Expedia back lawsuit against Trump immigration bans

Next in the tech industry’s fight against Donald Trump’s immigration bans: legal action.

Amazon and Expedia filed declarations of support Monday for Washington state’s lawsuit against Trump’s executive order, which among other things temporarily bans immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries. Also, there is a tech industry meeting set for Tuesday to explore filing an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit against the bans.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told his employees in an email Monday that the company is also exploring other legal options, and that it is seeking to work with Congress on legislative action, according to several media reports.

“This executive order is one we do not support,” Bezos wrote. He said the United States is known for “harnessing” immigrants’ talents and that it’s “a distinctive competitive advantage for our country.” He ended the email by saying that affected employees — at least a few dozen, according to the company’s filing — should know that “the full extent of Amazon’s resources are behind you.”

Travel site Expedia also stressed that the ban could hurt its business.

“Expedia believes that the executive order jeopardizes its corporate mission and could have a detrimental impact on its business and its employees, as well as the broader U.S. and global travel and tourism industry,” Robert Dzielak, Expedia’s executive vice president and general counsel, wrote in the company’s declaration. Meanwhile, Github is organizing a meeting of tech companies today to discuss how the industry can lend its legal support to a lawsuit against the bans, although it’s unclear which lawsuit that would be. Among those invited are Google, Netflix, Salesforce, Airbnb and SpaceX.

A Netflix spokesman wouldn’t confirm attendance, but he told SiliconBeat in an email that the company is discussing the issue with other companies.

The companies that have committed to attend so far include Box, Kickstarter, Twilio and AdRoll, according to Reuters.

Back to Bezos: His words are similar to other tech executives’ statements over the past few days. But his opposition is notable because of his relationship with Trump.

Trump has slammed Bezos and Amazon, saying last year that the online retailer “is getting away with murder tax-wise” and bringing up antitrust issues. Also, Bezos is the owner of the Washington Post, which has devoted many reporters to covering Trump.

“He’s using The Washington Post for power so that the politicians in Washington don’t tax Amazon like they should be taxed,” Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in May, which wasn’t the first time he had leveled such accusations.

For his part, Bezos once tweeted that he would reserve a seat on one of his Blue Origin rockets for Trump, with the hashtag #sendDonaldtospace.

Still, Bezos was among the tech executives at a meeting at Trump Tower in December. Bezos called the meeting “productive.”

After Amazon raised the cost of free shipping to $49. minimum. I began looking for other sources to purchase my goods in the US, and found them. You just have to look around, but most places online with lower prices do have free shipping. I found that if Amazon has goods returned, then they send those goods right back out to another buyer. I got really tired of that turn around of so many previously used purchased and used items. No more and I get them faster and sometime cheaper.
