Apple to make original shows and movies: report

Apple is entering the streaming wars, with plans to roll out original scripted shows by the end of the year, according to a new report.

The Wall Street Journal says Apple is in talks with Hollywood types, and plans to bundle original shows and possibly movies with its Apple Music service.

This could boost the iPhone maker’s position against music-streaming leader Spotify. Apple Music had 20 million subscribers to its $10-a-month service as of December. Spotify says that as of September, 40 million of its 100 million users are paying subscribers.

The move would also position Apple as a rival to Netflix and Amazon, although the Journal report says “it doesn’t appear” Apple plans to spend as much as those companies to match the breadth of their offerings.

This report is the latest of many throughout the years regarding a possible Apple foray into TV and movies. There’s been speculation about, and even pressure for, an Apple-branded television set. Talk about a streaming service has been around for a while, and Apple has negotiated with programmers and cable companies such as Time Warner. Among the obstacles that have reportedly held things up include Apple’s desire to include local TV channels for a streaming service.

The move also comes as Apple has seen slowing sales of its devices and as the company and others have placed greater hopes on its services.
