Hot markets: San Jose, San Francisco — and Yuba City?

Well, aren’t we becoming just one giant megalopolis?

As Bay Area and Greater Sacramento buyers throw up their hands at the cost of housing, they are moving farther and farther afield. We’ve known this for some time, but now a new report adds a surprising name to the list of the nation’s hottest markets: Yuba City, up there in the Sutter Buttes, nestled by the Feather River, 40 miles north of Sacramento.

That’s right. Yuba City is No. 11 in the nation on the new “Hotness Index” from realtor.com, which identifies where houses are selling most quickly — and which markets are generating the most listing views on realtor.com. It’s the first time that Yuba City, county seat of Sutter County, has made the list of the 20 hottest markets in the U.S.

What else is in the Top 20?

Some of you may be surprised: Vallejo is No. 3; Stockton is No. 7; Fresno is No. 13; and Modesto is No. 20.

None of them are sexy. But they’re all pretty affordable.

Less surprising is this: The San Francisco-Oakland metro is No. 1, while San Jose is No. 4.

Sacramento is No. 9 and bucolic Santa Rosa is No. 12.
