Should Twitter delete Donald Trump’s account over fake news concerns?

President-elect Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated tweet Sunday that millions of people voted illegally for Democratic rival Hillary Clinton is fueling renewed calls that Twitter delete his account.

On Sunday, Trump alleged in a tweet that he “won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally” even though there isn’t any evidence that widespread voter fraud occurred during the election.

With concerns about fake news on social media sites heightening after the election, some of Clinton’s former aides — including former campaign spokesman Jesse Ferguson — and supporters argue that Trump’s tweet ran afoul of the company’s rules about online conduct. Twitter takes into account if its user is “repeatedly creating false or misleading content” when deciding what constitutes as spam. Accounts engaged in that type of behavior may be temporarily locked or permanently suspended, according to the policy.

On Monday, Twitter was tight-lipped about how it is handling these concerns.

Twitter spokesman Nu Wexler said in an e-mail that Twitter’s rules apply to all accounts, but stopped short of clarifying whether Trump’s tweet went against the company’s policy, whether the tech firm was considering deleting his account or whether he received any violation notices.

“We do not comment on individual accounts, for privacy and security reasons,” he said.

Calls that Twitter pull down Trump’s account have occurred throughout the presidential election, but many of the concerns have centered around hate speech. After Trump’s victory, some people blamed social media companies for not doing enough to stop the spread of misinformation.

Even Facebook, the world’s largest social media site, grappled internally with what to do with Trump’s social media posts during his campaign, The Wall Street Journal reported in October. Citing anonymous sources, the news outlet reported that some employees believed that Trump’s posts about banning Muslims from entering the United States should have been removed for violating the site’s rules on hate speech, and that the tech firm was bending the rules for him.

The phrase “delete your account” was in Clinton’s most popular tweet during the election.

And with Trump taking to Twitter to criticize the cast of Hamilton, the New York Times and even the results of the presidential election, some voters believe that Trump might be better off if he stopped tweeting. About 59 percent of voters want Trump to delete his Twitter account, a recent national poll by Quinnipiac University, found.

But Trump’s tweets are making headlines and that might not be bad for Twitter, which has struggled to attract more users to its site. Mercury News columnist Michelle Quinn wrote earlier today that Trump’s constant tweeting could “breathe new life” into Twitter.

SiliconBeat reached out to Trump’s press office and will update this post if anyone responds.

Insane. Trumps account is the best thing to ever happen to Twitter. I’ve doubled down on shares. We have a united states president who tweets. That’s all.

Only mindless twitter users would complain about the POTUS breaking the rules. Now these idiots are against people having “OPINIONS”? Trump did not state a fact, he stated his opinion. He is not officially the president until he is sworn in at the inauguration, so anything he states at this point is basically his opinion.

    • TheBride

Private accounts should not be used for anything other than personal stuff, birthdays…etc., official opinions, statements, policies should be on govt accounts only. What’s not good for the gander is not good for the goose.

    • Dennis Woolsey

Trump is the president elect, as such what he says to the masses is implied to have a certain level of credability, not opinions. However he is choosing to use a far reaching technology to spew what are obvious lies for his own gain. It clearly says something about the wisdom of the man and at the same time reduces twitter to the level of the tabloids. Like the tabloids, enjoy it for its entertainment value while waiting in line, just don’t spend money/valuable time on it or use it as a basis for your world views.

      • He did in fact win the legal popular vote, and anyone who can’t add 2 and 2 to figure that out doesn’t belong on Twitter. And I’ll say one more thing to the wannabe morons out there – most of your federal officials have been lying their butts off about really serious stuff for more than 200 years, so get over it or get a pacifier to suck on.

Dalethorn….you must be getting your news from those Macedonian fake news sources. Trump did NOT win the popular vote and there’s a decent chance that the electors can vote him out due to their conscience. You can check that out, but I suggest reading a credible news source and not Social Media. Keep deluding yourself…Trump has already lied about draining the swamp with his Cabinet picks as evidence. Nothing but the facts ma’am:)

          • Dream on. The Democrats lost. Any attempt to change that can and will be met with appropriate force.

trump is one of those mindless twitter users you speak of.

  • TheBride

Not liking use of non-Government accounts at all. Not for Hillary Clinton, not for Donald Trump. No one. He needs to quit Twitter, but he will go through withdrawal. He’s addicted.

  • SamSungSillySong

Yes, delete his account and ban him forever. He’s a teen stuck in a senior body. Dump him.

  • I suspect that many people are going to call for a return to lynching. And it’s going to be the socialist/Commie Left, since they are now the people with the biggest axe to grind.

Don’t cut him off from his twits, but do append his e-tourettes with fact checks to help redeem the least gullible amongst them.

    • cheryl55

The Twits are the ones getting “offended” the REST OF us take it for what it is 140 characters! PERIOD!

  • Jleslie Sudberry Jr.

they should close down the accounts of any so called journalists, politicians, and idiots that are on social media…….look at how wrong they were on the OSU incident this week alone

  • cheryl55

If they do.. then they need to shut down the whole dam thing! PERIOD! They cannot single out everyone that isn’t a screaming radical LIBERAL and still call that freedom of speech OR social media.

    • George MacCleave

      how are liberals radical?

  • Satan

Lmfao such little whiny babies!! Between California registering INVADERS(they’re NOT immigrants) to vote when they apply for a drivers license, the nonsensical law refusing to require ID to protect CITIZENS right to vote, and 0bama the filthy piece of worthless garbage telling invaders to vote I’d bet there are absolutely fraudulent votes! Especially I’m California. I’m lobbying Trump to demand a recount of California. It’s about election integrity, let’s see if we have voter fraud or not! And if so, to what extent. Recounting California is absolutely vital to our Republic.

    • I’d guess that California margin of 63 to 31 percent favoring Clinton over Trump should come down to at most 49 to 45 percent Clinton, and enough fraud votes would be removed that Clinton’s popular vote margin would disappear. The voting machines are a joke, in South Carolina at least. I haven’t voted in California since 2004, so I don’t know how easy it would be to run a few hundred illegals through the machines every day.

      • Satan

Honestly don’t know. The point is why not? Why not recount this biggest state, a state admittedly a sanctuary for invaders. It’d show once & for all to what extent voter fraud is an issue. It may or may not change the popular vote totals. Detroit supposedly had more votes than residents. Democratic Detriot. And the media stays mum. But Russians “hacking the election”, a misnomer if ever there was one is bleated about ad nauseum. I hope Trump abolishes the CIA.

  • Satan

Oh yes and Kaine tweeted about a shooting incident at OSU, when it was a car & knife situation. Twitter should seize that fat tub of lards account!

  • Norwegianbear

17 comments. Wow, really looks like the whole country wants to take down the Donald’s tweets!

    • George MacCleave

17 comments on one website doesn’t mean people don’t want to take his twitter account down idiot.

  • wolf1254

I guess this author missed the “REAL” news story this week about the 3 million illegals who voted in California…

    • It’s easy to see how fake California is. Subtract just that one state and Trump has a huge margin in the Electoral College *plus* a big margin in the popular vote. The Democrats believe that fake California should be allowed to overwhelm ALL 49 of the other states in the election. Real Americans disagree.
