Tech’s most beloved CEOs, according to employees surveyed by Glassdoor

Who are the most beloved tech CEOs in Silicon Valley?

The list includes several familiar names, but the valley’s big bosses failed to crack the top three of Glassdoor’s annual accounting of highest-ranked chief executives for the first time since the list was born.

This year, Google’s Sundar Pichai is a first-timer on the list, which is based on employee reviews submitted to the Bay Area-based jobs website. Pichai, who became chief executive of Google last year after a reorganization that created parent company Alphabet, made his debut at No. 7 on Glassdoor’s list, with a 96 percent approval rating. Larry Page, who is now CEO of Alphabet, was No. 1 on the list as last year, when he was still Google’s CEO.

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, who topped the list when jobs site Glassdoor first rolled it out in 2013, remains at No. 4 this year, unchanged from last year. He had a 97 percent approval rating.

In 2014, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner topped the list. This year, he’s No. 5, also with a 97 percent approval rating. Close behind with a 97 percent approval rating, Marc Benioff of Salesforce came in at No. 6, climbing from the No. 21 spot last year.

Salesforce reviews show that employees value the charitable work of Benioff and Salesforce. One reviewer listed among the top reasons to work for the San Francisco cloud company: “always giving back to the community through philanthropy efforts.”

Here are the other Bay Area tech CEOs on the list:

  • No. 8: Apple’s Tim Cook, 96 percent approval
  • No. 20: Adobe’s Shantanu Narayen, 95 percent approval
  • No. 22: Genentech’s Ian T. Clark, 95 percent approval
  • No. 24: Juniper Networks’ Rami Rahim, 94 percent approval
  • No. 32: Workday’s Aneel Bhusri, 94 percent approval
  • No. 36: Protiviti’s Joseph A. Tarantino, 93 percent approval
  • No. 37: Nvidia’s Jen-Hsun Huang, 93 percent approval
  • No. 43: Autodesk’s Carl Bass, 92 percent approval

Glassdoor’s rankings are based on employee reviews submitted anonymously between May 2, 2015 and May 1, 2016. Each CEO must have received at least 100 reviews from current and former U.S.-based employees during the period. The companies have at least 1,000 employees.

As for the nation’s top 3 most beloved CEOs, they might not be recognizable to many of us: Bob Becheck of Boston-based management consulting company Bain was No. 1, followed by Scott Scherr of Florida-based Ultimate Software and Dominic Barton of San Francisco-based management consulting company McKinsey.

Glassdoor also released rankings for CEOs of small and medium-size companies — which includes entries from what might be your favorite tech startups — as well as companies outside the United States, which can be found on its website.
