Sen. Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, has called a press conference at 1 p.m. PST Wednesday to make a major announcement, multiple media outlets including Politico are reporting.

Cruz is expected to announce his intention to name Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, as his running mate should he receive the GOP presidential nomination, reports WMUR, ABC News New Hampshire affiliate.

Is adding Fiorina the elixir that will help Cruz s campaign as he tries to stop Donald Trump?

Although Fiorina suspended her presidential bid in February after a seventh-place showing in the New Hampshire Republican primary, she managed to make her mark in a short period.

She managed to  make it to the main debating stage where she hammered her message that the country s defense needs to be stronger.

As The Atlantic pointed out, Fiorina in the debates tended to ignore her fellow GOP rivals and focus instead on one person: former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton.

Donald Trump insulted her appearance in an interview ( Look at that face ) and then apologized for his comments during one of the early debates.

Fiorina responded:  I think women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said.

In March, Fiorina endorsed Cruz, praising him for challenging the status quo in Washington, D.C.

The role of the principled outsider is also how the former HP CEO has pitched herself over the years. That was her campaign theme in her role as CEO at HP (challenging the old boy s network) and during her failed 2010 run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. Barbara Boxer, the California Democrat.

If Cruz does tap Fiorina, will it help his campaign as it faces the next slate of primaries, including Indiana, which is sizing up to be critical for both Cruz and Trump.
