AMC throws melted butter on its CEO’s texting-in-movies idea

A day after the civilized world rose up in outrage over a plan to allow texting in its movie houses, AMC Entertainment reversed itself, completely killing its CEO’s suggestion that cell-phone use in theaters was a really cool idea.

As I wrote here, Adam Aron had suggested earlier this week in an interview with Variety that allowing texting and smartphone use in movies was a great way to bring in more young moviegoers.

“You can’t tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone,’’ said Aron, triggering a storm of controversy and angst among the movie-loving public who begged to differ with him. “That’s not how they live their life.”

As the story went viral and social-media outlets lit up with opposition to the idea, AMC quickly backpedaled as their PR folks tweeted for everyone to calm down.

Friday, AMC went a step further in its backwards walk, issuing a clear statement on Twitter with the headline:

NO TEXTING AT AMC. Won’t happen. You spoke. We listened. Quickly, that idea has been sent to the cutting room floor.”

In the statement, the guy who started the whole PR disaster said the company was changing its position due to the widespread and very upset feedback they’d been experiencing ever since he first opened his mouth.

“We have heard loud and clear that this is a concept our audience does not want,” the statement read. “With your advice in hand, there will be NO TEXTING ALLOWED in any of the auditoriums at AMC Theatres. Not today, not tomorrow and not in the foreseeable future.”

Now everyone can go back to watching their movies in peace at AMC, unless, of course, they’re surrounded by millennials who’ll continue texting up a storm just as they always have.

    That’s the problem!!!!!!

I would have never stepped foot into an AMC theater ever again.

Ugh. There never -was- a proposed ban on texting in movies. Stupid sensational journalism.

If you read the initial interview, you merely have a new CEO who was asked a leading question about whether allowing texting or cellphone use may be something the company should consider to draw in a younger audience, and the new guy on the block basically said ‘yeah, we have to be open to that and other ideas, as long as it doesn’t piss off anyone else.’ Somehow, that turned into “AMC wants to allow texting!!!”
