Google Ventures won’t fund North Carolina startups till anti-gay law is gone

Google Ventures will not invest in North Carolina startups as long as a new law limiting protection for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual people remains in place. “I am not comfortable deploying dollars into startups there until the voters there fix this,” Google Ventures CEO Bill Maris wrote in a note to the company’s partners, according to tech website Recode.

The law bars transgendered people from entering bathrooms and locker rooms of the gender not matching the one on their birth certificate, and bans local ordinances protecting LGBT people from discrimination.

More than 80 high-profile executives, many from tech firms, signed a letter to North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory opposing the law and saying it “sanctioned discrimination.” The move by Google Ventures appears to be the first concrete step by a major company to stop doing business in the state because of the law.

Google Ventures, which manages $2.4 billion, has not invested in North Carolina startups, Recode reported, but the company has been backing enterprises in biotech and life sciences, fields from which many North Carolina companies are emerging.

A lot of people argue that it’s corporations, not the people, or the government, who actually run this country. Some of it is very covert, some very overt. This is an overt example of a company claiming some kind of moral high ground, then using its resources to impose its will on the people of a sovereign state.

Google is doing this at the same time it is parking something like $43B in profits offshore – mostly in Bermuda – to avoid paying US income taxes.

Seems like their sense of morality is a bit . . . variable, depending on the issue.

    • Kaibelf

Impose their will? They aren’t giving you free money. And they don’t have to.

      • RegularGuy55

No, I’m talking about their ‘bully pulpit’ stance where corporations refuse to invest in states where they (whoever ‘they’ are inside the company) disagree with some law or policy.

Their idea is to dangle some kind of investment – usually tied to new jobs – in front of a state if that state will overturn some law the company management disagree with. That’s how corporations impose their will on states.

        • BillinDetroit

As noted above, they do business in Saudi Arabia where homosexuality is a capital offense. So no, they do NOT have the moral high ground.

  • JLC

SO essentially everyone should sell their souls for a dollar? This where the rubber meets the road. I say to hell with the LGBT. If they want to force people to accept them, then they’re in the wrong country.

    Try China, or Cuba.

In America we reserve the right to discriminate against behaviors. If you can force people to behave a certain way with the pocketbook, then so can we.

    • Kaibelf

You probably should throw away your computer then since all those companies support google’s position. If YOU can’t treat everyone the same, you should leave America.

      • jabusse

One thing I don’t want from Google is their money, or anything else they provide either. One thing I do want them to do is leave me alone and take their products and sales force elsewhere. BTW is the Google Saudi Arabia number. Ask them why they actively support the country that by law KILLS LBGT people and damns a state that won’t let a man go into a girl’s bathroom.? 800-844-9880 or 1-646 257 4500. Their hypocrisy is showing.

      • JLC

Perhaps it’s time for the government to tell the coorperations to stop bullying people with their ideology.

Consequently, all people are treated equal for the most part. All behaviors are not.
When you start getting the same exact results from homosexuality and gender confusion as you do from the traditional heterosexual behavior, then look me up., Until then I’ll treat it according to its merits.

      • Gravity

I wasn’t treated the same when I went for a job at “Hooters” with a triple A cup!!

    • Richie Kau

Well, you are stuck in the wrong century!!

      • Gravity

Wrong! Plenty of people (especially those with children) think this is just common sense. Democrats and Republicans, more liberal or conservative.

      • BillinDetroit

Nope … your gravy train has just derailed. Now begins the push back.

  • jabusse

bigot central = google. At least the folks in NC won’t be getting 40 -50 google sales calls daily. So there are some pretty good side effects of the Bigot central decision.

    • Kaibelf

Poor baby. You’re not special anymore and now you want to whine because people won’t give you their money.

      • jabusse

give me their money? Google ads are so ineffective as to be laughable. What is bothersome is their sales force. We are far better off without them.

        • Jasmine Finn

And we are far off better without you and your hateful people. Funny how you do not realize what this is going to do to your economy. Not just with Google, but with all the other companies who will no longer support North Carolina.

          • jabusse

I can send my daughter there without being molested by a trans whatever., I won’t have to dig ponds for trans ducks And I think when normal people start using the same tactics the companies will be back. There are so few of you folks that you don’t matter. Even black lives matter more. The economy will not suffer one wit. It may even improve because it might be more of a mecca where normal people can go and not be forced to mingle with people they don’t want to mingle with or serve people they don’t want to serve. Funny it takes a slave state to recognize the slavery the gay community wants to impose on others.

          • Jasmine Finn

Maybe when I visit you can hit the back of my neck so I can be a redneck like you. WOOOHOO. Transexuals are not child molesters moron.

          • jabusse

No, of course they aren’t. They are as normal as apple pie.
They are perfect human beings relentlessly pursuing their goals and not interfering with the normal course of things. They are what all people should aspire to be. Perfect in God’s eyes. What an idiot you are. Road kill on the highway of life.

  • Louis Louis

praise the Lord that this governor signed this law. woe unto those who call evil good and good evil. someone has to take a stand against the people who obey satan.. whether they know that is what they are doing or not. and they probably don’t know.. since he is the father of lies, as Christ the Lord declared.

    • Silver Badger

It is interesting that those who thank God for their right to hate are the ones to which God sends the tornadoes and hurricanes in response.

      • Gravity

Who’s hating (Yeah!, tornadoes killing people!) and who is standing up for having some boundaries when it comes to nature and protecting children (molestation happen every day in bathrooms as it is)!.

        • Jasmine Finn

Thank you old ignorant one. Transexuals are not child molesters, but you might be.

          • Gravity

I’m not ignorant. Think about it….A guy who is a sexual predator knows he can go into a female bathroom and SAY he’s trans or confused or whatever AND NO ONE CAN DO ANYTHING and then he molests the young girl or whomever in the bathroom. BTW, how old are you? LIKE TWO? “but you might be”….GEEZ, grow up!

          • BillinDetroit

They don’t care about the danger to others … they just want to pursue their make-believe sexual orientation without having to actually commit to it.

          • Gravity

Someone made a reply that seems to have been deleted…basically he said “If they are “trans” (transitional) and “gender confused” (also a transitional thing), why do we have to be so committed and solid about something that will end up endangering kids and totally revamping society’s bathroom structure?

      • BillinDetroit

This isn’t about a “right to hate”. It’s about a reasonable right to privacy and safety. Not that you care.

    • Jasmine Finn

How about you worry how YOU will get into Heaven and let others worry about themselves. Go beat a Bible somewhere else cause you religious zealots are only about promoting hatred. That is not what GOD wants.

  • Jeffrey Sterling

I think I’m going to get rid of my google chrome browser

    • Jasmine Finn

Way to reduce yourself to the ignorant person that you are. Now if you would only stop posting.

      • Jeffrey Sterling

Sorry Jasmine you got it backwards … I’m intelligent and know the facts about gays and all their lopsided diseases and other serious flaws due to their lifestyle … so being with gays being stupid enough to live like that leave no choice but to view them as being stupid… do some research on their health issues and get woke the you know what up

      • Katherine Middleton

I have received 129,000 dollars last year working online and I am a full time student..edn I am connected with an entity that I heard about and I have received such great cash. It is really user friendly and I am just so happy that I found out about it.

        Look here for details
        jk…

  • BillinDetroit

Let’s see … you haven’t ever invested in NC and are threatening to continue doing so? Got it. Effoff.

Avery Jackson is the loving face of transgender. By the time that she is POTUS or whatever path she chooses to take, I pray that the U. S. will be inclusive-doers and inclusive-thinkers. Regardless,
Avery, lead and we will follow.

“Each year Planting Peace transforms the Equality House for one week, painting it the colors of the transgender flag. Last year, 8 year-old Avery Jackson, a transgender child, visited the house
while it was painted with transgender pride and realized there must be a community of people who would support her. It was that day she decided to start showing her face in pictures because she knew she’d be safe and accepted. “I loved the Rainbow House when it was painted like the transgender flag. I felt so happy and proud to be transgender.”’ Learn more about Avery Jackson at https://www.crowdrise.com/transgenderhouse

Six Words: ‘You’ve Got To Be Taught’ Intolerance.” Anti-LGBTQ is just another face of the same anti-Black bigotry of the 50s.

Copyright Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein

    “You’ve got to be taught
    To hate and fear,
    You’ve got to be taught
    From year to year,

    It’s got to be drummed
    In your dear little ear
You’ve got to be carefully taught.

You’ve got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff’rent shade,
You’ve got to be carefully taught.

You’ve got to be taught before it’s too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,

You’ve got to be carefully taught!”

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s South Pacific, the wildly popular musical revolving around cross-cultural love affairs in the South Pacific during World War II, open in 1949.
