New Passport service lets you take an Uber from San Diego to Mexico

San Diego State students — and anyone else for that matter — looking to blow off of steam in Tijuana are getting a new way of traveling into Mexico from the U.S.: Uber.

Starting Friday, Uber is launching Passport, a new cross-border service that runs from San Diego to just about anywhere in the northern part of Baja California. Want to go to TJ, Ensenada or Mexicali after finishing up a Padres game at Petco Park? Uber has you covered.

There are a few strings attached, however. Passport is only offered through Uber’s black car option and riders have to pay a $20 convenience fee in addition to the standard Uber ride rates. It’s estimated that a ride from downtown San Diego to Tijuana’s airport will cost about $100.

And…The service only works one way. From the Mexican side, you can get an Uber ride in Baja to the border crossing, but you will still have to get out there and walk into the U.S., then get another Uber ride, or some other option, to get home.
