Move over, Justin Bieber – Pope Francis is coming to Instagram!

Hold on to your papal zucchetto!

Pope Francis this week is joining Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift and reaching out to his millions of admirers by launching his own Instagram account.

Imagine the selfies about to fly out of Vatican City as Francis gets his Insta-groove on, wielding the handle ”Franciscus.”

Francis, as we’ve reported before, is no stranger to social media. He’s been using Twitter since 2013, using the @Pontifex handle to tweets in nine languages, including Latin, and boasting and English-speaking account following of close to nine million people. And then there’s this: :

Well, you know you’ve made it when Twitter bestows upon you your very own emojis! In honor of Francis’ visit this week to the United States, Twitter has created four hashtags that let you view the emojois: #PopeinUS, #PopeinDC, #PopeinNYC, #PopeinPhilly

Go ahead, try them out. We’ll wait. As you can see, the hashtag reveal small images including Pope Francis before the U.S. flag, the U.S. Capitol, the Liberty Bell . . . and, last but not least:


The pope, who arrived in America on Tuesday and then swings by the White House on Wednesday, could not be reached for comment.



According to various blog posts and news sites, the pontiff’s Instagram page will go live on Saturday, using the popular photo-sharing app to celebrate  the third anniversary of his inauguration as the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics.
