Traffic slows in the morning commute going westbound on the Interstate 80 during the shutdown of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013 in Berkeley, Calif. Commuters faced their first morning on Thursday without the bridge, but there weren't major traffic snarls as day broke across the Bay Area. Alternate bridges to get into San Francisco were more crowded around 6:30 a.m., and Bay Area Rapid Transit trains appeared to be carrying a heavier load than usual. But commuters were managing to get around. (AP Photo/Eric Risberg)

Mountain View-based YourMechanic has raised $24 million to expand its on-demand car repair and maintenance services.

Founded in 2012, the company dispatches mechanics to car owners homes to handle more than 500 different types of jobs, ranging from oil changes and scheduled maintenance to brake work. Customers book an appointment through the YourMechanic mobile app or website, and receive an upfront price for the service. This transparent pricing is on average 30 percent cheaper than rates at traditional auto shops and dealerships, according to the company.

The latest funding round, announced in a news release Tuesday, was provided by SoftBank Capital, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, Data Point Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, SAIC, Verizon Ventures, American Family Insurance, PG Ventures, Promus Ventures, and Silicon Valley Bank. It brings YourMechanic s total financing to $32 million. The company operates in 700 U.S. cities, according to the release, and plans to expand throughout the rest of the country and into Canada.

I founded YourMechanic in 2012 to bring transparency and convenience to car owners at a fair price, co-founder and CEO Art Agrawal wrote in a news release.  Since then we have serviced tens of thousands of happy customers and equally happy cars, resulting in triple-digit annual growth.

YourMechanic technicians carry certification and insurance and must undergo background checks, according to the release. Customers rate their mechanics, and those with ratings that fall below four stars will be dismissed. Repairs are backed by a warranty.

Consumers want on-demand services, and the ability to schedule and monitor auto repairs will play a key role in enhancing customer service and transforming the transportation sector, Jeffrey Black, Director at Verizon Ventures, wrote in the YourMechanic release. YourMechanic s modern approach to auto service has been embraced by customers across the country who expect value, convenience, and transparency.  We are thrilled to work with the YourMechanic team as they expand services to new markets.
