Facebook s investment in photo-sharing site Instagram is paying off.

Instagram on Wednesday said it reached more than 200,000 advertisers, a sign that the photo-sharing company is contributing more mobile ad dollars to Facebook, which purchased the company in 2012.

In September, Instagram said it was expanding advertising on its site to businesses worldwide and launched 30-second video ads. It s also allowed users to branch out beyond square photos, giving people the option to post portrait and landscape images.

The number of Instagram advertisers surpasses the total of advertisers on Twitter, which reached about 130,000 from October to December.

Facebook, which owns Instagram, has more than 2.5 million active advertisers, the company said in January. The Menlo Park social media giant doesn t break out the amount of money it makes from Instagram ads, but it raked in a total of $5.8 billion in sales from October to December with most of the dollars coming from mobile ads.

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg told investors during a fourth-quarter earnings call in January that Facebook and Instagram   have become the two most important mobile advertising platforms.

About 75 percent of Instagram s advertisers are from outside of the United States in more than 200 countries, according to the tech firm.

Facebook purchased Instagram in 2012 for about $1 billion in cash and stocks. Instagram now has more than 400 million monthly active users.
