Intel and AT&T demo connected drone in Barcelona

At&T announced Monday that it is collaborating with Intel on a connected drone.

In a demonstration at Mobile World in Barcelona, Spain, Intel showed off a Yuneec Typhoon H drone equipped with Intel RealSense™ Technology, streaming video and telematics from the air over an LTE connection.

Anil Nanduri, an Intel vice president in the chip giant’s New Technology Group said in a release that drones “have great potential, from inspections, precision agriculture to deliveries of consumer goods and providing emergency disaster relief.”

Chris Penrose, AT&T vice president for Internet of Things Solutions, said the telecom’s LTE network can connect industries like deliver, construction, insurance and agriculture.

“We’re using the network to transfer important information, images and video quickly and efficiently — far beyond the boundaries of short range connectivity,” he said

Intel will work with the AT&T Internet of Things (IoT) team and an AT&T Foundry innovation center in Palo Alto, will to evaluate performance of the LTE network at higher altitudes.

Live view cameras and sensors in a drone operating beyond the line of sight need a reliable network for connectivity, AT&T said in a release.
