Google reportedly eyeing Qualcomm server chips

Google, which is one of Intel’s biggest customers for data center server chips, may announce an interest in a processor being developed by Qualcomm, according to a report.

The giant search company has been working with Qualcomm on the chip and is posed to endorse it next week if it meets Google’s requirements, Bloomberg reports.

Bloomberg’s sources told the news service that Google will commit to using the chip if it meets its specs.

A Google spokesperson said “we don’t comment on rumor or speculation.”

A Qualcomm server chip would give Google a second source for a vital piece of technology. Intel now commands about 99 percent of the market for server chips.

The news should get Intel’s attention. It has used the cushion of server chip dominance to weather a downturn in sales of personal computer chips.
