Amit Singhal, head of Google search, is leaving the company after 15 years.
In a post on Google+ Wednesday morning, Singhal said he s moving on to philanthropy.
As I entered the fifteenth year of working at Google, I ve been asking myself the question, what would you want to do for the next fifteen? The answer has overwhelmingly been: give back to others. It has always been a priority for me to give back to people who are less fortunate, and make time for my family amidst competing work constraints–but on both fronts, I simply want to give and do more.
Singhal, who was senior vice president of search and a Google fellow — a title given to the company s most distinguished engineers — says his last day will be Feb. 26. He will be replaced by John Giannandrea, who leads Google s research and artificial intelligence efforts, according to Recode, which reports that the company is merging search and AI.
True to form — it s common to find articles with Singhat in them that also mention Star Trek — Singhat again mentioned his love for the TV show and seems to be leaving with nothing but love for Google.
My life has been a dream journey. From a little boy growing up in the Himalayas dreaming of the Star Trek computer, to an immigrant who came to the United States with two suitcases and not much else, to the person responsible for Search at Google, every turn has enriched me and made me a better person.
Singhal said he feels it s the right time to make his move, and that search is stronger than ever. Google parent Alphabet on Monday reported results that beat expectations.
