Intel said Monday that it has completed its acquisition of Altera, which will now operate as a business unit of the giant Santa Clara chip company.
Altera is now part of Intel, said Intel s CEO Brian Krzanich in a statement.
The new unit will be called the Programmable Solutions Group, and will be led by former Altera executive Dan McNamara.
Intel announced plans to acquire the San Jose company in June for $16.7 billion, in an effort to bolster its position in sales of chips for data center servers. Altera s field programmable gate arrays are increasingly used in servers for some tasks, posing the possibility that they could displace some of Intel s more powerful and more expensive chips.
McNamara said the combination of Altera s FPGA technology and Intel s unmatched semiconductor manufacturing facilities will give customers the power and flexibility to create the next generation of electronic systems.
Intel said it plans to offer Altera FPGA chips with Intel Xeon processors in customizable combinations.
