A Prime holiday for Amazon

It was another busy holiday season for Amazon, and a big year for its Prime service.

More than three million people signed up for Prime in the third week of December, Amazon reported on Monday. Meanwhile, the number of hours of videos streamed to Prime customers during the holiday season doubled from the same period last year.

“This was another great holiday season to be a Prime member,” company CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement.

Prime, which costs $100 a year, provides members with access to streaming movies, television shows and songs as well as shipping on certain items at no extra cost. Amazon says it now has “tens of millions” of Prime members worldwide, although it declined to disclose a precise number.

Amazon’s devices also sold well over the holiday season, the company reported, with record sales. The company’s Fire tablet, a $50 device with a 7-inch screen, was Amazon’s best selling item overall during the holidays. The no. 3 seller was its Fire TV stick, a $50 digital media player.

The company did not say how many of either device it actually sold.

The Seattle-based e-commerce giant provided a list of the top-selling products in each of its store categories. Among them: Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100 Electronics Discovery Kit, which was the best-selling toy;  “Laugh-Out-Loud Jokes for Kids,” which was the no. 1 book; and “Call of Duty: Black Ops III,” which was tops in video games.

This year marked the 21st holiday season for Amazon. The company did not offer any details on number of products it sold or the revenue they brought in.
