Elon Musk will tweet for work: Tesla wants engineers for Autopilot

Perhaps Twitter should have a button for submitting resumes. Elon Musk tweeted Thursday that he’s looking for engineers to work on Tesla’s autopilot software, and thousands of people liked and retweeted his tweets.

Musk’s recruitment effort comes after Tesla’s rollout of autopilot features last month to 40,000 of its vehicles. Autopilot helps steer, change lanes, parallel park and manage speed. As we’ve written, the Autopilot ability has sparked some issues, including some caused by car owners who haven’t heeded Tesla’s call not to go hands-free. The company has temporarily disabled it in Hong Kong because of regulatory concerns there.

But back to the future. On Tesla’s website, a handful of recent job listings have the word “autopilot” included, and the same is true on LinkedIn. I’ve asked Tesla just how many “hard-core” engineers Musk — who has said fully self-driving cars are two to three years away — was talking about.

At least one famous person has inquired publicly: Aaron Levie, CEO of Box.
