In case you re looking for yet another music app, there s a new one from a pretty big name: YouTube.
YouTube Music is now available for Android and iOS, offering up free, unlimited music videos that can keep playing until you say uncle. YouTube is touting the app as a discovery engine.
No matter where you start in the app, the music will never stop, YouTube said in a blog post today. Every song you play or artist you choose will take you on an endless journey through YouTube s music catalog. Thanks, algorithms.
But humans also have a hand in recommending something called the Daily 40, according to T. Jay Fowler, the head of music products at YouTube. He told the Wall Street Journal: If a song is blowing up on YouTube, this is where you d find out about it.
Included with the new app is a 14-day trial of YouTube Red, the company s recently rolled out video subscription service. YouTube Red offers ad-free videos for $9.99 a month. And YouTube Red includes a Google Play Music subscription. So to get this straight: YouTube Music is free, but if you pay for YouTube Red you can view ad-free music videos, plus offline play and the ability to switch between video and audio only. And if you pay for YouTube Red, you can also get ad-free streaming music.
YouTube s introduction of the Music app also was quite artist-centric — musicians relationships with streaming services are key nowadays. (Think Taylor Swift and Spotify, and Taylor Swift and Apple Music.) The blog post noted that Google and YouTube have paid out $3 billion to the record industry, and helped provide a platform for artists to promote themselves.
But we want to do even more to support artists and all the fans who turn to YouTube to discover music, so we re making the experience even better with a brand new YouTube Music app, the blog post said.
