Hewlett-Packard is dropping the public cloud that it offered as part of its Helion hybrid cloud platform, ceding the territory to Amazon Web Services and Microsoft s Azure.
The company will focus on private cloud and traditional IT that its large corporate customers want, while supporting AWS and Azure for public cloud needs, HP Cloud executive Bill Hilf said in a blog post Thursday.
We have made the decision to double-down on our private and managed cloud capabilities, Hilf said, adding that the Helion public cloud will sunset January 31 2016.
Hilf wrote that customers are demanding a hybrid of traditional IT, private cloud and access to public cloud capabilities for certain workloads.
And they want them faster than ever before, he said.
The company – soon to split in two with the cloud becoming part of HP Enterprise – apparently decided that offering all three would be a losing game. The public cloud is dominated by new services like AWS and generally serves smaller to mid-sized companies, while a predominantly IT plus private model is preferred by the giant corporations that are HP s major customers.
HP – or HPE – will shut down its public offering in January, Hilf said.
The company has alreadyy added greater support for Amazon Web Services public cloud as part of its hybrid delivery, Hilf said, and has also worked with Microsoft to support Office 365 and the Azure public cloud.
