PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey is again the company’s CEO.

Dorsey, who had been interim CEO since July after Dick Costolo’s departure in June, returns to the top job he held once before, from May 2007 to October 2008. In a filing today, the San Francisco microblogging company said Dorsey will also continue to be chief executive of Square, the online payments company he founded.

Influential investors such as Chris Sacca had pushed for Twitter to take away the “interim” from Dorsey’s title. “Basically, at all costs, we need to keep the founders involved,” Sacca said last month.

Dorsey will now be charged with trying to attract new users to the service, which is often judged against Facebook, the world’s largest social network.

The company also named Adam Bain chief operating officer. Bain, who was head of global revenue, had been seen as a possible choice for CEO.
