Tesla Motors announced a big jump in vehicle shipments this quarter compared with the same time last year.

The electric vehicle maker shipped 11,580 vehicles in the third quarter, a 49 percent increase over the same period last year, the company wrote Friday in a regulatory filing. The tally included the first delivery of its new Model X luxury SUV.

The release of the Signature Model X was limited to six founders – early investors and supporters of the electric vehicle company.

The company unveiled its production version of the Model X at a Tuesday evening event in its Fremont facility. The Tesla-fest, complete with a first look at the production vehicle and test rides, drew thousands of employees, Tesla owners and soon-to-be Model X owners.

The first Signature Model X vehicles are priced at $132,000 before federal and state incentives.

The release noted that the Palo Alto-based company had a one-week, planned production shut-down during the quarter.
