Drum roll, please: Tesla’s Model X crossover vehicle will finally launch at the company’s Fremont plant tonight.
For fans of the electric-car company who can’t be there (or weren’t invited), here’s something to relieve you of your fear of missing out, straight from CEO Elon Musk’s Twitter feed.
Model X launch webcast live today 8pm at . Time to show the real thing.
The Model X was unveiled in 2012 and scheduled to go into production in 2013. After a long delay, the high-end version of the Model X will be delivered to customers who long ago plunked down deposits of thousands of dollars. Louis Hansen wrote recently that the Signature Model X required a $40,000 deposit and costs $132,000.
Tesla hasn’t announced the price of the base version; some estimates say $80,000. The company’s website says a $5,000 deposit is required to reserve a Model X. (Sorry, they don’t take American Express.)
Besides those famous Falcon doors, here’s what Signature Model X owners can expect from Tesla’s newest vehicle:
- All-wheel drive
- 90-kilowatt battery
- 250-mile range (EPA estimate)
- From 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds
- Motor power: 259 horsepower front, 503 horsepower rear
- Top speed: 155 mph
- Cash price: $132,000, plus destination charge and fees
