Photo-sharing site Instagram just got more popular especially outside the United States.

The Facebook-owned company said Tuesday that more than 400 million people use Instagram thanks to growth in countries such as Brazil, Japan and Indonesia.

In December 2014, Instagram had more than 300 million users. More than half of the number of new people who joined Instagram live in Europe and Asia, the company announced in a blog post on Tuesday.

When Instagram launched nearly five years ago, 400 million seemed like a distant dream. Now, we continue to strive to improve Instagram — helping you experience the world through images and connect with others through shared passions, Instagram wrote.

In September, the company also said it was expanding advertising worldwide and launching 30-second video ads.

The announcement came shortly after Instagram said it would allow users to branch out beyond square photos, which has been a trademark of the site since it launched in 2010.
