Apple Watch owners are going to have to wait a while longer to upgrade the software that undergirds their gadgets.
Instead of releasing the new version of watchOS on Wednesday, Apple postponed it, blaming a hard-to-squash software bug. The company did not offer a new release date for watchOS 2.0.
We have discovered a bug in development of watchOS 2 that is taking a bit longer to fix than we expected. We will not release watchOS 2 today but will shortly, the company said in a statement.
Apple has said that the new version of the Apple Watch operating system will allow the device to run programs on its own, independent of a connected iPhone. On the first version of the software, all watch apps actually ran on the iPhone it was connected to. The new software also allows developers more access to the sensors and functions of the gadget and brings with it some new watch faces.
The company did release iOS 9, the latest version of the operating system that underlies the iPhone and iPad, on Wednesday as expected.
