The Super Bowl that will be held at Levi s Stadium in Santa Clara in February 2016 will be one of several games that CBS Sports will show through a live stream, including — for the first time — one of the games on Thanksgiving Day.
The stream will be available on desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smart phones whose users are signed up with Verizon.
In addition, the streams will be available on connected television devices, including Xbox One, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku players and Roku TV devices.
All told, CBS Sports will stream the Super Bowl, four AFC playoff games, and two regular season games.
The regular season games that will be streamed are an October 4 game from London between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets, and the Thanksgiving game between the Carolina Panthers and the Dallas Cowboys.
The game in London marks the first time CBS has streamed a regular season game.
All NFL fans will have access through their computers, tablets and now Connected TVs to two regular season games for the first time in addition to all of the AFC playoff action, culminating with a truly historic Super Bowl, said Jeffrey Gerttula, general manager of CBS Sports Digital.
The move comes as more people abandon traditional pay-cable networks and services and seek out TV programs that they can access through the Web or mobile networks.
The games CBS Sports is streaming will be available for free, without authentication, or any requirement that the user is subscribing to a cable TV network or a satellite TV service.
Separately, Sunnyvale-based Yahoo has struck a deal to stream a regular season game between the Buffalo Bills and the Jacksonville Jaguars. That game will be played Oct. 25 in London.
We re thrilled that the NFL has chosen Yahoo for this historic opportunity, said Marissa Mayer, Yahoo s chief executive officer. It marks a significant change in the way users can access this amazing content.
